Legislative Priorities

Your feedback increases our awareness of the issues you care about.

AFS keeps you informed about legislative action that impacts you. By monitoring the progress of all the legislation, keeping tabs on Washington, D.C., and concentrating on the issues that you care about, AFS can increase your financial and personal well-being.

This year, AFS will concentrate on notifying you about the following issues:
  • The ability for small businesses to use pre-tax dollars for health insurance premiums
  • Simplification of the tax code
  • Raising the limit on tax-deductible retirement fund contributions for individuals and small businesses
  • Working to continue SBA programs, grants and funding for small businesses
  • Clarifying the tax definition of an independent contractor so small-business owners can avoid costly penalties by easily understanding who is an employee and who is an independent contractor
  • Increasing the deduction for business meals because this is the primary way small businesses promote their products
  • Bipartisan proposal advancement to save and strengthen Social Security – without raising payroll taxes
  • Permanently repealing the estate tax so small-business owners can invest more in their companies and less in legal fees
  • Continue supporting tax credits for health insurance premiums that would help more Americans, who do not have access to insurance through their employer, get the coverage they need
  • Give individuals and small businesses the freedom to tailor health insurance policies to their needs by introducing new health care legislation
  • Simplifying private pension plans while making them more financially attractive
  • Decreasing capital gains taxes
