LEGISLATIVE UPDATES:
2005 Legislative Agenda
Americans for Financial Security is dedicated to making sure Washington, D.C is working for your financial
fitness, not against it. That is why we act as your legislative watchdog, keeping close tabs on what the politicians are
trying to do to your pocketbook.
You can trust AFS to be in your corner, closely monitoring the progress on every single piece of legislation that affects
you. This year, AFS will concentrate on these important issues for individuals and small businesses:
Supporting tax credits for health insurance premiums that would help more Americans who don’t have access to
insurance through their employer get the coverage they need
Introducing health care legislation that gives individuals and small businesses the freedom to tailor health
insurance policies to their needs
Advancing bipartisan proposals to save and strengthen Social Security – without raising payroll taxes
Simplifying private pension plans while making them more financially attractive
Cutting capital gains taxes
Clarifying the tax definition of an independent contractor so small-business owners can avoid costly penalties by
easily understanding who is an employee and who is an independent contractor
Making the repeal of the estate tax permanent so small-business owners can invest more in their companies and less
in legal fees
Raising the deduction for business meals because this is the primary way small businesses promote their products
