FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Member:

Tax season is once again upon us and this issue of Common Sense is full of useful information and tools to help individuals, self-employed professionals and the small-business owner get through the frenzy with ease. We have highlighted several AFS membership benefits specially designed to help you with your tax filing. Not only do we offer discounts on tax filing services, but also access to tax help centers to help you make sense of tax codes and language. Be sure to take a look before starting your return.

There are many people out there ready to make a buck by helping you file your taxes. Don’t become a victim of an under-experienced or unqualified “tax professional.” This month’s cover shows important guidelines on finding someone that can help you make the most of your money, and not send you scrambling to fix a situation they only made worse.

Procrastination, or a new way of filing? In this issue, our ProTalk section takes a closer look at a growing trend towards Alternative Tax Planning. More and more Americans each year are waiting until mid-August, or even as late as October 15, to file their taxes. When considering whether this is a viable option for you, there are several things to consider before making your decision.

AFS has also highlighted several ways to get the most out of your relationship with the IRS in this issue’s Legislative Updates. Many taxpayers never take advantage of the help available through the IRS Web site and help lines. Who better to ask your questions than the people who make up the rules?

We hope this issue of Common Sense helps relieve some of the stress of tax season by providing important and useful information for your use. AFS continues to work hard on your behalf and we thank you for your membership and the confidence placed on us to promote your well being.

Sincerely,
Art Granda
AFS President
